Chapter 8 - Pages 91-105
October 1, 2009Summary: At the beginning of this chapter Jeannette finds out that her Grandma Smith (Rose's mother), has died. She left them lots of money and a house. The family moves in to the house, Rex gets a job, and the kids all get their first bikes. Things tern around in this chapter, and everybody is happy.
Main characters: The main characters in this chapter are Jeannette, Rex, Rose, Brian, Lori, and Maureen.
Character development: Jeannette finds out what it's like to have a bit of money. She isn't greedy, and she cherishes everything she gets.
Setting: They live in Phoenix. They moved in to a very big house on North Third Street. Jeannette is 9 in this chapter, so it takes place in the past.
Quote:"We had never had bicycles - we had learned to ride on other kids' bikes - and it had never occurred to me that one day I might actually own one myself." Jeannette thinks this when she sees that her dad bought new bikes for her, Brian, and Lori. I think this quote is important because it shows what they have to go without. It's also important to the chapter because it shows that they never thought they would own bikes because they never had enough money to afford them.
Vocabulary: Hordes: a large group, multitude or number.
Flourish: to be successful.
