Summary: In the beginning of this chapter Rex losses his job. The family has to cut back on eating and spending money. Rex and Rose get into a huge fight. Everyone is outside listening to them fight when all of the sudden, the second story window breaks and Rose's paintings come flying out. Rose is next. She's hanging out the window saying that Rex is trying to kill her. The kids run upstairs to help. When Rose gets back into the room, Rex says that she did that. We don't find out who did it. Rose applies for a job at the school and they hire her immediately. She doesn't like working but she has to go to work for money. Rex starts drinking again, and he's cheating on Rose.

Main characters: The main characters are Jeannette, Rex, Rose, Brian, Lori, and Maureen.

Character Development: Jeannette really believes in her dad. She's his favourite daughter. She would do anything for her family. She doesn't complain that she's hungry because she knows it will make her parents mad.

Setting: The family still lives in Battle Mountain. Jeannette is 7 years old. They've been living there for almost a year.

Quote: The most important quote is, " We were always supposed to pretend our life was one long and incredibly fun adventure.". Jeannette says this when she tells her mom she was hungry and ate the last piece of food. Her mom gets mad because she complained. I think it's important because it shows that when the kids complain about anything, Rex and Rose get very angry.

Vocabulary: Vying: competing or contending.
Evasive: tending or seeking to evade.
