Summary: In this chapter we find out that Stefan was the one in the cemetery. Stefan followed her to make sure she didn’t get hurt. He likes Elena, and the reason he cut her off was because he didn’t want to lose control. Stefan made the football team. Elena, Bonnie, and Meredith find out that somebody was attacked yesterday in the cemetery around the same time they were there. The girls make up a guy named Jean-Claude and spread rumors that Elena is going out with him so that Stefan is jealous.

 

Main characters: In this chapter the main characters are Elena, Stefan, Bonnie, and Meredith.

 

Character development: Stefan really likes Elena. He’s very protective and discrete. Elena doesn’t know that Stefan likes her because Stefan doesn’t show or tell her.

Elena really wants Stefan. She tries to make Stefan jealous by spreading rumors about herself. The rumor is that she has an older boyfriend.

 

Setting: This chapter takes place in Fell’s Church. They’re at Robert E. Lee high school. It’s September 5 and 6.

 

Quote:

“Human blood. The ultimate elixir, the forbidden wine.”

The narrator says this to explain how hard it is for Stefan. Drinking human blood would make him stronger and faster, but he decides not to because he thinks it’s wrong. It’s hard for Stefan to resist but he does because he doesn’t want to take a human life.
