Summary:  In this chapter we learn about Stefan’s past. He has a brother named Damon, who loved the girl that Stefan loved. Her name was Katherine. Stefan hates Damon for a reason we don’t know yet. In the present Elena decides to break up with her boyfriend Matt. At school she learns lots about Stefan. She creates a plan to talk to him. When she finally does it he cuts her off to go to football tryouts.

Main characters: In this chapter the main characters are Elena, Bonnie, Meredith, and Stefan.

Character development: Elena is once again very hurt that Stefan cut her off. She’s never known people who cut her off, and don’t listen to her ideas. Stefan acts very weird around Elena, and she doesn’t know why.

Setting: This chapter takes place in Fell’s Church, Virginia. They’re at their school and its early September.

Quote:

“Everyone had a place in the world, and his place had once been among the nobility.”

This quote is important because Stefan’s time was a long time ago. Stefan doesn’t think that he fits in with the present day people. The other students can sense that he’s different, and some are scared.
