Summary: Elena Gilbert, her sister Margaret, and her Aunt Judith come home from Paris. Her parents died a couple of years ago. As Elena is walking to school the next day, she notices a huge crow in a tree. The crow is watching her, so she throws a rock at it. Meanwhile, Stefan Salvatore is in the woods drinking animals' blood. He's a vampire. Stefan goes to school.

Main characters: The main characters are Elena Gilbert, and Stefan Salvatore.

Character development:

Elena is very self absorbed. She knows that she's pretty, and she uses it against people. She is very popular at school.
Stefan is a good vampire. He drinks animals' blood instead of humans' because he doesn't want to hurt or kill humans.

Setting: This chapter takes place in Fell's Church, Virginia.

Quote:

"I've never felt so utterly and completely lost."

Elena wrights this in her diary. I think it's important to the chapter because it shows that Elena is very lost without her parents. She misses them more than anybody else.

Masquerade: To go about under false pretences or a false character.
Renounced: To give up by formal declaration.
